"True Stories" are inserts, ranging from one to three minutes in length, in which a noted actor, performer or other celebrity tells a quick story about something that happened in his or her childhood. These stories tend to be funny or sassy rather than serious, and sometimes you wonder why the celebrity ever bothered to remember the event under discussion. Steve Guttenberg, for example, spun a tale about the time when he and his sister were being chased by a scary dog. The dog stayed on their heels right up to their doorstep, so Guttenberg courageously opened the door, pushed his sister inside and turned to face the beast.
What happened then? "Absolutely nothing happened," the actor recalled. Of course, that is the charm of "True Stories." Young viewers have 'Amazing' stories tops no trouble finding something to identify with, something that strikes a chord in their own lives. The celebrities become more human, set apart from their TV, film or music video personas. "True Stories from Famous People" offers a fun and healthy dose of reality for younger viewers who often have problems separating the fantasies of television from the facts. And we can look forward to an entire special of "True Stories," with a whole collection of celebrity memories, scheduled to air in September.
I wouldn't go so far as to call "True Stories" educational programming, but in its own lightweight way, it's sort of enlightening. ence. If you haven't tuned in before, give it a try. The show tells a different story featuring new characters every week. The only consistent theme is a broadly stated notion that good things can magically happen to those with the faith and pluck to expect them. The episodes can be funny, dramatic and suspenseful.
They often tend toward sentimentality, but they rarely lack charm. One of my favorites is an episode starring Sid Ceasar as a washed-up magician whose career is suddenly revitalized by a pack of magic playing cards. Another memorable episode is set in World War II, where a crew member of a bomber plane seems marked for certain death until, at the last moment, he finds a way to use his talents as a cartoonist to save himself. "Amazing Stories" is a creative and basically wholesome series that is perfectly suited for family viewing.
